The Waste Land, the most representative poem of T.S.Eliot (1888-1965),marked the consummate artistry of Anglo-American modernist poetry.Noted for its fresh visual imagery, flexible tone and highly expressive rhythm,it won the reputation of "the milestone of western modernist poetry" and started a new direction for the development of English poetry. Its publication confirmed T.S.Eliot's position as the great master of modernist poetry, hus he has been playing a leading role for several decades in English poetry and has great influence upon the Anglo-American literature. The Waste Land,a crystallization of T.S.Eliot's ideas and artistic techniques for modernist poetry creation, represents the summit of the development of western modernist poetry. The translation of this poem certainly provides an approach for Chinese readers to better understand this great epic and learn from its unique techniques for the development of Chinese new poetry. However, the translation history of The Waste Land in China is not smooth; it experiences its ups and downs. This thesis intends to make a comparative study of the Chinese translations of T.S.Eliot's The Waste Land from the macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, that is,the non-textual analysis and textual analysis.By taking Reception Aesthetics and Manipulation Theory as the theoretical foundation, the author studies different Chinese versions done by the same translator in different periods, and different translations in the same period done by different translators in the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan. Finally the author draws the conclusion that literary translation is greatly influenced by the historical and literary background of the target culture,as well as the translators' subjectivity. This thesis adopts Anglo-American New Criticism in analyzing the source text and making comparison of the translated texts.Besides Introduction and Conclusion, this thesis consists of four chapters. The Introduction briefly explains the academic value of this subject, studies on this subject at present, methods to be adopted in this thesis, theoretical and practical significance of this study and the basic structure of this thesis;Chapter One is an introduction to The Waste Land and its Chinese translations as well as studies on these translations up to the present;Chapter Two is a historical survey of the translation of The Waste Land in China. It smoothes out the translation history of The Waste Land and demonstrates its distinctive stages and their respective historical background;Chapter Three focuses on the comparative study of different Chinese versions of The Waste Land in China from the diachronic and synchronic perspectives. The author compares four versions and carefully analyzes their merits and demerits, which pave the way for further studies in Chapter Four;Chapter Four first overviews the translation of The Waste Land in China and its different Chinese translations, and then it makes a deep analysis from the perspective of reception context, ideology, translators' subjectivity and translation strategies. It demonstrates that reception context and ideology exert great influence upon translation activity and translated texts proper; The Conclusion summarizes the whole thesis and highlights the academic value and practical significance of this thesis for further study of this poem in the future.
