where和 to which 间是可以转换的,但是有一个前提条件,就是要在定语从句中.什么是定语从句?定语从句说简单点,就是修饰名词的从句.那么从句前就一定要有名词才行,不然修饰什么啊?这个句子中,where的前面没有名词,同时,这个句子也不是在修饰某个名词,因此可以判定这不是一个定语从句,这是一个由where引导的状语从句,如果改成这样,就对了：
put the books back at the place to which they belong after you have finished them.
这个句子把被修饰的名词（先行词）补充出来了（at the place),也就把这个句子从状语从句转换成了定语从句.

因为在这里不是定语从句，而是状语从句。
句中并没有先行词。因此不能判断为定语从句。
