一个最简单的分辨方法：前面那句，注意到有个比较级的sooner了吗？那么后面就要用than。后面那句没有比较级的词，所以不用than而用when。
实际上no sooner ... than 和 hardly/scarcely ... when 就是这类句型仅有的固定搭配了，记住就好了。

不谈句子所表达的意思，单看句子的结构：We had no sooner sat down to eat than......
是不是一个比较级：no sooner... than .....
所以，学习并记住这种比较级的用法。而且注意时态：这句中，电话铃响起了在后，坐下吃饭在前，过去的过去，用了过去完成时。

另一句不是比较级，用了when。...
