1. DO you still remember the place __which____we visited last week?
说的是访问过的那个地方，也就是说关系代词（先行词是the place）是动作visit的宾语。
可以改为两句话：
DO you still remember the place？
we visited the place last week. （定语从句中the place用关系代词取代）
the place 是 visit 的宾语，换成关系代词 which 后当然也是宾语。
2. DO you still remember the place __where___we visited the painting exhibition?
说的是参观油画展的地方是关系副词where所代表的the place，where在定语从句中用作地点状语。
也可以变为两句话：
DO you still remember the place？
we visited the painting exhibition in the place. （in the place在定语词句中换成关系副词 where）
in the place 在第二个小句中是地点状语，在定语词句中的取代它的关系副词where当然也是地点状语）

visite 是及物动词，后面应该跟宾语，1中which便做visited 的宾语，即，visited which。
2中visited后本来就有宾语，the painting exhibition 做的便是它的宾语，
而we visited the painting exhibition 作为一个整体短句，做where 的状语。即2是where 带的一个典型的地点状语从句。...
