At least one course in statistics is recommended for them who plan to become journalists,because they will often need to evaluate whether information based on statistics is dependable.
答案是them错误
不过错误原因是them不能当做从句主语还是them没有指代?
如果将them换成those,那those不就没有指代了么?

是的,此题中最好把them改成those,原因就是them不能当做定语从句的主语; those相当于those people.
句意:至少一门统计学方面的课程被推荐给那些想成为记者的人,因为他们将来会常常需要评估基于统计学方面的信息是否可靠.

也就是说如果those指代的是people就可以将people省略？

those不仅仅指人,还可指物. 不是说those指代的是people就可以将people省略, 根本就没有people一词, 只用those即可. 我在回答中说 those相当于those people是为了便于你好理解, 这儿的those 还可理解成those students呢.

多谢…也就是说those没有指不指代的问题咯。不过those和them一样是代词啊，代词应该考虑指代问题啊

those有指代啊, 指人, 确切地说, 就是指代"想当记者的那些人或学生"

是没有people或者students呀, 没有也可以这样理解呀.是根据句意推断出来的.因为句中有course 一词, 说明谈论的是"学生". 又如: 此句中的先行词those后也没有students一词, 但根据句意可以推断出来: those 就是指的those students. The teacher asked those who had completed their tests to leave the room as quietly as possible.

原因是
1、who的前面必须是先行词，而先行词通常是名词、泛称代词、不定代词；
2、those who是泛指代词作先行词+who（主格）；
3、如果是them who，则自相矛盾：them是人称代词，但指称不明；而且them是宾格而who是主格。
