Once the entrance examination to college is over, which major to choose becomes a thorny issue for most examinees and their parents. Some prioritize majors with more job opportunities, while others want to follow their own interest. Now I’ve already completed my higher education, but if I had the opportunity to revise my decision, I would take career prospective into more consideration and choose the major with more job opportunities when I filled the application form.
Interest is certain to be of vital importance, but we must first analyze the employment condition of the major one is in favor of. Maybe some examinees are fond of history, philosophy or music, but these majors are bleak in job opportunities. Even you get the master degree of these majors, there are few suitable jobs for your choice unless you study in quite a prestigious university and you are extremely outstanding. There is not much demand for these majors, and it is unlikely to find a satisfactory job related to the expertise students acquire. Some are arguing that major is no longer a determinant factor when applying for jobs, but it is not case as long as you take part in several human resources fair. Most enterprises prefer to recruit employees majoring in relevant field so as to lessen the trouble in training.
Most students are from backward rural areas, and the tuition fee is a heavy burden for the family. If we take a major with gloomy future and fail to be employed, how can we live up to the high expectations from our parents? We are obliged to share the domestic responsibility, and therefore, we must acquire sufficient marketable skills to find a satisfactory job. Otherwise, we are to blame for wasting the hard-earned tuition from the family. With bright future in mind, we are instilled with more motivation because there is hope ahead. In such happy mood, life is more meaningful and we have more potential to meet the requirements from our parents and the society. However, this does not mean we should take a prospective major even we hate it. That’s another extreme which suffocates one’s initiative. The precondition is that we don’t dislike the major, and then we can cultivate our interest gradually.
To sum up, career prospective should be prioritized, as long as we don’t hate the major. This is a pragmatic stance responsible to our future. Thanks to the rich education resources, we can follow our interest in the spare time. In this way, job and interest is both guaranteed.
