禅宗史上,有位知名的禅师.他有一个爱好,就是养植兰花.在他住持的禅院里,人们到处可以看到各种各样的兰花,品种繁多.香客游人来到寺院听法礼佛,看到满架的兰花暗香四溢,清幽甘畅,都不由得赞叹不已.也由此,人们将喜爱兰花的禅师叫作“兰花和尚”.
某日,禅师应邀去寺院外讲经说法.行前,他将一位弟子叫到跟前,对弟子说,我去讲法,天黑才回来,你要替我好好照看这些兰花,记住给它们浇水.
弟子知道禅师钟爱兰花,因而在他走后看护得很仔细,在给兰花浇水时更是分外小心.但他一个不留意,脚下一绊,竟将一个兰花架子撞倒,整架的兰花轰然一声倒地,瓦盆破碎,花叶零落.看着一地的残花烂泥,小沙弥吓坏了,不知如何是好.禅师的其他弟子看到了,过来帮他收拾,并对这位弟子说,等天黑师父回来,你就照实认错吧,师父是不会责难你的.
晚上,禅师回到了寺院,弟子向师父报告了白天发生的事情,他想师父知道心爱之物被毁,一定会生气恼怒的,因此他请求师父惩罚自己.晋迨禅师听后只是平静地笑笑说,你既然不是故意的,又知道了东西被毁不是一件好事情,以后自会用心做事,我还怪你什么?我的确喜欢兰花,视兰花为朋友.但我种植兰花的目的是为了香花供佛,美化寺院和大众心境,不是为了生气烦恼的啊.世事无常,转瞬即逝,没有什么东西是不灭不坏的,我怎会执着于生命的生与死呢?这可不是咱们的禅门家风呵!
弟子听了禅师的一番教导,霍然有悟,更加勤于修持,终于也在佛学上有所成就.
