How scientists establish their theories?
All famous scientists have their own theories about certain aspects of scientific research.How do they establish such theories?
Basically speaking,there are two kinds of scientists.The first kind of scientists based their theories on experiments,such as Samuel Ting,a professor of particle physics at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.He discovered a new particle in the 1970s after extensive experiments,and won a Nobel prize for physics because of this great achievement.
The other kind of scientists used their thoughts and imaginations to develop new theories,especially in areas where it is hard to prove anything only through experiments.For example,Stephen Hawking,a seriously disabled British scientist,developed a new theory about the origin of the universe through his creative thinking despite the fact that he has been confined to a wheelchair for the most time of his life.The theory is also well received worldwide,which made him even more famous and popular than Professor Ting.
But often these two kinds of scientists can supplement each other in their study.Experimentalist scientists can prove through their experiments whether an existing theory is true or false,while thought-based scientists can often give their experimentalist colleagues some inspiration and show them the way to further their research and experiments.It is the joint work of both kinds of scientists that has led us this far in scientific exploration and discovery.
