Verrocchio was instructed to paint “The Baptism of Christ” with little time left; however, the background of the painting was still not done, and Verrocchio did not want to rush it, so he took Leonardo da Vinci to draw from nature, hoping to finish the background afterward. While out in the wilderness, Verrocchio became sick; he could only ask Leonardo da Vinci to draw in his place. In the second morning, when Leonardo unveiled the canvas, he was shocked to find the angel on the painting had been scratched off by his mentor’s colleagues out of jealousy. He realized the seriousness of the situation; with little time left, and to defend his mentor’s reputation, Leonardo decided to finish the angel himself. When his mentor recovered from the sickness and saw the new painting, he hugged Leonardo with both arms and said: “It is so perfect that I think from now on I only deserve to have a graver in my hand.” From that incident onward, Leonardo da Vinci gained fame, and became one of the most distingused painters in Florence.
