the rest = 其余的.other= 其他,除开 Other than me,the rest of the people in my class forgot their homework.除了我,班上其余的学生都忘了做功课.The other people in my family all went to good college.家里的其他人都去了非常好的大学.

the rest可以单独做主语，表示“剩下的一切东西或人，但other后面要加名词才可以做主语，而且other+名词表示“其他的”，不是剩下的一切，
