What do you do when you see litter on the beach? You pick it up, of course. But Pozzi uses the litter to make huge sculptures of ocean animals. The programme is called Washed Ashore and its goal (目标) is to let people know the effects of litter in the ocean. Pozzi started Washed Ashore when she noticed plastic on beaches. Sunlight breaks plastic down into pieces. These small pieces of plastic enter the food chain. Sea animals eat them and end up dying. Pozzi always loved the ocean and the animals in it, and she wanted to do something to help both. One of the sculptures is a turtle (海龟). The turtle’s head is an old can lid (盖子). Another sculpture, called Fish Bite Fish, is made out of little bits of plastic. Pozzi doesn’t get all the litter by herself. When people find litter on beaches, they drop it off at a certain place. Then she and her volunteers begin to turn the waste into art.
Everything used for the sculptures is found on the beach, except for the framework and the materials used to connect the litter tighter. Who does Pozzi believe can save sea animals? “Kids can do many things,” she said. “They are the ones that can make things happen. I really believe it.”
