Friendlies is the official English name for the five mascots picked for the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing,though each of the doll-like mascots has its own name,as Beibei,Jingjing,Huanhuan,Yingying and Nini.When put together,their names mean,"Beijing welcomes you" in Chinese.
The mascots are cartooning renditions of four of China's most popular animals and the Olympic flame.Each of them represents the color of one of the Olympic rings and has a good wish:prosperity,happiness,passion,health and good luck.They are an incredible little family carefully chosen by Beijing 2008 to represent all of China to carry a message of friendship to the children of the world.Each of them has a rhyming two-syllable name,a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China.They also embody the five elements of nature .
However,the official English name of "friendlies" is somewhat controversial:the coined word can be taken as the result of "friend + lies",and it does sound like "friendless"!
