Bill goes to the back of the classroom where another PC is located. Once again he logs in using the Movie Recorder client and positions his avatar in the classroom. On this occasion though he positions the ‘camera avatar at the front of the room near the front wall looking back at the virtual students. This view is displayed on the plasma panel at the back of the room and hence allows Bill to view the virtual students whilst his lecture is in progress.
Once the students have arrived in both the physical and virtual rooms he starts the lecture. He uses the PageDown and Page Up keys on his PC to move the slides in the PDF Viewer and back again. While the lecture progresses he can see all the students with those logged in to the virtual world being represented via avatars that have their name above them.
During the lecture he sees one of the virtual students raise their hand to ask a question. He is able to speak directly to the student concerned and deal with the question just as he would in the real world.
4 Classroom Deployment
4.1 Equipment
In order to use the world to deliver a lecture the following items of equipment are required:
Desktop/Laptop (for slide display) positioned at the front of the classroom
Data projector/LCD Panel/Plasma Panel (for slide display) connected to the above
Desktop/Laptop (to provide lecturer with view of ‘virtual students’)
50” Plasma Panel (to provide lecturer with view of ‘virtual students’) connected to the above
Speakers ( to enable lecturer and students in physical classroom to hear ‘virtual students’ )
Microphone ( to enable ‘virtual students’ to hear lecturer and students in physical classroom)
Axis 212 PTZ Network Camera ( to provide live video of lecture in virtual classroom)
4.2 Layout
The equipment in the classroom should be positioned as shown by Fig. 1. The position of the desks in a U-shape is not essential but does have the advantage of increasing the feeling of presence for all participants since the real students can see the virtual students and vice versa.
