Is happiness relative?
Relative in the sense that from each individual's perspective their happiness would be equal to that of another even that of another in a prominently contrasting situation that would be generally viewed to be a considerably less desirable position? For example, who would be happier? A starving child in Africa given his first meal in two weeksor a mother at the birth of her healthy new born child. Another rhetorical question would be, can you measure happiness? If we could measure it then could we classify and compare differences/levels of happiness? However, happiness is a human emotion, clearly thus affected by bias/personal desire to view past memories other than they truly were. Regardless of this is it still possible to truly be 'happier' than someone else in a similarly 'happy' situation and consciously realize this? Or even acknowledge a difference in your levels of happiness and even the levels of happiness in others? I'm sure many of you will agree that without sadness we cannot appreciate and thereby understand happiness. Ostensibly this carries strong ties with similar theories such as yin and yang, you must have evil to have good but can there ever be more good than evil? Or on a long enough time scale would there always be a perfect equality of both? Clearly then a perfect equality of both happiness and sadness? If happiness is relative then this effectively disproves any sort of ideas of Heaven or a celestial paradise as anything other than the world we live in today as it would be impossible to be happy without being sad.
