Concrete is a hardened product created by mixing a chemically inert,granular material (aggregate) with a matrix composed of a cementitious binder and water .When water is added ,chemical reaction cause the matrix ,in which the aggregate is embedded ,to set ,dry out ,and harden ,producing the familiar material known as concrete .In structural concrete ,used in building and civil engineering ,the binder is generally portland cement and the aggregate is gravel or crushed stone and sand .Many other forms of special concretes exist ,however ,including lightweight concrete ,refractory concrete ,and chemically resistant concrete .They are usable as structural concrete .
