The number of 用谓语单数,因为主语是number是单数.
并且此题是陈述客观事实,用一般现在时
综上选择A
另外a number of是"一些"的意思,显然是复数.谓语用复数

The number of the students in our class is very big/large.=we have a big class.
．the number of表示“……的数量”，跟复数名词连用作主语时，中心词是number，谓语动词要用单数。

选A,The number of是只什么什么的数量,不要看students用的是复数,后面就用are,应该把有多少学生这个数字看做一个整体,所以用单数.
