She turned up at the old Duke cottage down by the south end of the lake, and she made herself at home there, just the same way that a starling will settle itself down into some other bird’s abandoned nest. And then what had been predictable and snug about the town and the woods and the fields and the lake began to seem unfamiliar and strange, and what I had always believed was real and true became in some way skewed, different and new, and it was a long time before I was able to quite put my finger on just exactly how.
