I want to know what is his name.这句what也可以做主语,那为什么不能用而要用I want to know what his name is.

I want to know what is his name.这句是错误的,应该是;I want to know what his name is.第一个句子是一个固定的特殊疑问句what作主语.所以后面用了正常的陈述语序.

My sister didn't tell me What the matter was with the girl也对啊 两种都对 第2个句子也是对的，不过有的人习惯说I want to know what his name is. 都是习惯问题，没有语法错误

what引导的从句必须是陈述句形式。如果按你所说该句中的what is his name，这是疑问句形式。
所以必须用：what his name is。
