instead作为介系词，不能单独使用，要用instead of。instead of也表示而不是，它后面如接动词，要用带-ing的形式（动名词），如：

横线所在句子是the idea的同位语，即为同位语从句。作为从句也有句子的结构，the money为从句的主语，谓语为is，an instrument为谓语动词be的宾语，故the end不能单独使用，必须前面加一个介词
