你理解的很准确了.what相当于the person that,但是我想你不明白的是：怎么等于呢?
其实,在句中what引导表语从句,在从句中作主语.
但是如果换作the person that那成分就变了,成了the person作表语,that引导的定语从句修饰the person.
所以,what (=the person that) ,这个说法不太确切,应该是what 相当于the person that,也就是说意思是一样的,但是成分不同.
