一道英语选择题,希望得到高手相助

楼上的答案没有解释清楚.我来说：
加不加the,很不同!
不加,east是表示方向性的副词,句中表示在城市的东方——城市以东的地方（已经到城外去了）
加the的话,语法也不会错,但是句子意思会变掉!加the以后,east变成是名词“东部”——the east of the city是指这个城市的东部（还在城内）!
而前文有提到在山上,所以应该是已经到城外去了.（除非这个山也在城内,不太可能——hill有可能在城内,mountain不太可能在城内）
类似的还有：
in front of the building 在大楼前（不加the,在大楼外面）
in the front of the building 在大楼前部（加the,大楼里面）

east在这里是副词，用in the east of the city的时候east就是名词

east在这里是副词，表示在东方。
要么就说in the east of the city,那时候east就是名词。
