On Tuesday Sam was again delayed by a traffic jam on his way to work. He had been warned the previous day that he would be fired if he were late again. He was now fully aware that his old excuse wouldn't be accepted any longer. His boss was probably pacing up and down, practicing what he would say to fire his employee.
He was. Sam entered the office at 9:35. It was very quiet in the room; everyone was hard at work. Sam's boss approached him. All of a sudden, Sam forced a grin, thrusting out his hand.
"How do you do!" he said. "I'm Sam Maynard. I'm applying for a job which I understand became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?"
The room exploded in laughter. The boss managed to stop his own smiling, and walked back to his office.
