The article is organized as follows.A closer
look is given to the requirements and characteristics
of UMTS,compared to existing communication
and information systems.A few important
aspects of UMTS standardization are explored.
First,a glimpse of history is given,resulting in the
distinction of three characteristic phases of UMTS
standardization.Next,the organization of the
Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) [1]
is explained in more detail,with an emphasis on
the innovative approach to globalized standardization
of UMTS in 3GPP.Third,key decisions
on standards and technologies for UMTS are
explained.Several trends are identified as relevant
to the future maturing of UMTS.Probable
impacts of these trends on future UMTS architectures
are discussed.Conclusions are then drawn.
A NEW WORLD OF
MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS
UMTS denotes a system concept which combines
major innovations in radio access,including both
new radio interface and radio access network technologies,
with a new service architecture allowing
for mobile-fixed convergence at least at the service/
application level.UMTS aims to provide
global mobile seamless personalized multimedia
communications and information services at high
bit rates in wide- and local-area environments.
