the day before 是相对过去来讲的“前一天” 指的是“过去的过去”,要和过去完成时连用
He told（过去） me he had finished（过去完成时） the work 【the day before】
相对现在来说”多少时间以前,说【时间段+ ago】,和一般过去时连用,与题干不符
