Against is a preposition and lean is a verb.
You could say he stood against the wall,it's correct grammar but doesn't make much sense,stand against the wall?How do you do that?
The original sentence was meant to mean:Leaning against the wall,he stood.Which bascially means he leans against the wall.Rather,you could not say he against the wall 'cause then the s doesn't have a verb.At least,he is against the wall.

That's correct,like I say:Thinking of you,I feel lonely.(Being) exhausted,I went home.
