这是因为he could do 中的这个do
语法中,在这种句型中,有do 就不要to,也就是要将谓语中的to 去掉.

那否定形式该怎么办呢 这种为什么就是这样用："When you no longer have something,the only thing you can do is not to forget......”

否定形式也是如此，用not doing 补充回答你的问题：你的那个例句是因为时态，一般我们说将要做某事，我们就用 not to do. 如果就陈述一般事情，我们就用not doing

是的。只不过是受到时态，否定的影响而已。

应该是习惯用法吧!这里的的call his wife 应该是和前面的the only thing he could do的do相对应的。？
