It is well known that the expansive behavior of in situ magnesiumaluminate spinel (MgAl2O4)1 can generate two opposite behaviors when formed in therefractory castables’ matrix:if,on one hand,it can close joints and generatecompressive stresses2,on the other it can also spoil the castables’ mechanical and corrosion /infiltration properties if poorly designed.Considering these aspects,greatefforts have been placed in order to produce spinel-forming castables with adesigned permanent expansion,taking into account the grain size of thereactants,the binder source,the presence of liquid phase and so on3.
