Alan Robinson could a man who surprised everyone.Fifteen years ago ,he was paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident.Today,he runs marathons.Robinson is now training for the Boston Marathon.Last year,he ran it ,too.
" The reason I wanted to run a marathon...It started off that I was planning on catching the bus...I got tired of buses leaving me and I couldn't run and I would walk to catch the bus and the bus driver thought I was being arrogant and would drive off and leave me,"said Robinson.
In 2003 Robinson competed in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.That was his first try at completing the 26.2_mile course.It took him six hours and two minutes.Given his condition,his doctor said it's unusual he is able to even stand up.
" When they blew the whistle and shot the gun off I just did the best I could...I ran as hard as I could and the rest is history,"said Robinson.
To train for the marathon,Robinson spends most of his time at Bally's in Hyde Park,where he is the master of the stair master.He normally trains six hours a day on it .At one time he spent 13 hours climbing those stairs.Last year he ran 45 miles in 13 hours.Robinson finally wants to do a 50-mile run.So far he has run 6 marathons and one ultramarathon.
" It's something I became good at .one thing yoi have got to do with a disability...you di what you're good at and then everything else will come along with that,"said Robinson.
