关于leave的用法,
I was not surprised to find that the machine still refused to work after I had reassembled it,for the simple reason that I was left with several curiously shaped bits of metal which did not seem to fit anywhere.
句子中的left with为什么用了被动呢?这里的leave是留下的意思,我觉得应该用主动语态啊,还有就是我不知道什么时候leave当离开讲,什么时候当留下讲,是不是需要根据上下文呢?

其实”离开“和”留下“这两个意思是相关联的,主要是要弄清楚谁是离开的对象.举例说明：I'll leave my child with my wife.正因为”我“要”离开“,所以”孩子“就”留给“了妻子,即 My child is left with my wife.
但是回到你给的句子,情况又稍微不同.那里使用了被动其实是一种卡通式的描述.你读完整句,头脑里会浮现出：我对着多出的几个奇怪的部件手足无措,机器毫无反应的场景.整句都是以the machine为主,表现出我搞不定the machine反而被the machine搞定的囧况.
